Leading up to a coaching or mentoring programme there may have been a lack of trust and openness with staff feeling they had no one to turn to in times of difficulty or change. There may have been no support systems in place such as regular appraisals, one to one sessions with a line manager or clear lines of feedback and evaluation.
Where staff development is supported by coaching and mentoring it is important for managers acting as coaches or mentors to consider individual needs, expectations and motivation of staff. Clear communication and opportunities for feedback need to be in place. All staff who have signed up for the programme need to feel supported and heard. Ideally people should have access to an internal intranet, discussion groups and a range of websites and resources to support them in their development.
