Below is a tool for use in many different coaching situations. Try it for yourself now.
This is the GROW model by Graham Alexander and further developed for coaching by Sir John Witmore.
G = Goals (exploration of)
R = Reality (Current situation)
O = Options (Opportunities available)
W = Way forward (Willingness to take action)
Use the GROW model to answer these questions:
- What is your current goal for developing your coaching skills and behaviours?
- Are you looking to introduce coaching into your organisation?
- What objectives/outcomes do you want to see as a result of introducing a coaching culture?
G – Start with the goal being very specific about what it will achieve and whether it matches both your own values and those of the organisation.
R – Consider the facts and reality around that goal. Where are you currently? What steps have already been taken? Who is on board? Focus on the positives and negative aspects of the situation – cover all the facts.
O – Now consider your options and possibilities. What might work well? Who would need to be on board? What departments might benefit from coaching? Who can you approach? What team/resources would you need to make this work?
W – Now what do you need to do? What are your priorities? What actions do you need to take? What are the possible barriers and how will you overcome them? How can you ensure the success of this programme?
